Having had a career based in Science and Pharmaceuticals for the best part of 30 years, I found myself looking for a complete change when I retired 10 years ago. In that time I had always been creative with craft, and to this day I love and admire beautifully crafted unique items, from wood to metal but glass has always fascinated me. The depth of colour, the variety, the uniqueness of it all.
I began with stained glass but quickly moved on to explore fused glass and realised I could build a business and passion around this varied material. Having been taught by many specialists over the past 10 years I now make Fused Glass Jewellery my main body of work.
I primarily use Bullseye glass. I use many different combinations of coloured and Dichroic glass and I love the seemingly endless possibilities there are to be found. Dichroic Glass is a specialist glass which displays two different colours by undergoing a colour change in certain lighting conditions, refracting and reflecting the light!
I also love the fact that there is always the potential for a wonderful surprise when I open the kiln, even happy accidents have a place! As with any fully hand made item, getting totally matching items is almost an impossibility, so things like earrings will be as similar as I can make them!
My jewellery designs have evolved with me. I use quite a few different techniques in order to achieve my distinct styles, some are totally unique to me as I teach myself more each year. I use sterling silver earring hooks, posts and butterflies, plus all chains on the pendants. The fine silver used in some of the items is very pure silver and is hallmarked to that effect.
